About Mary

Welcome to my about me page, where I share about my life outside of my work. My life is full of beautiful people, pets, and hobbies that enrich and support me. In the past, I’ve been hesitant to disclose personal information. Today, I’m trying something new and different in order to feel more aligned and reach my goals, something I often ask my clients to do.

At home, my husband, Nathan, and I take care of a variety of pets. We have a cat named Jet, two dogs, Benji (a large Standard Poodle) and Nyx (a very small Havanese/Poodle mix, aka Hava-poo). We also have a snake named Fray, who’s the oldest of our pets. Jet and Nyx are pretty good friends and play when Jet is interested. Benji and Nyx are very close and play together often. Outside we have three bonsai and an assortment of plants. Caring for bonsai is my newest hobby, which I began in late summer of 2025.

I have a lot of established hobbies and interests. I’m deeply embedded in nerd culture. Nathan and I met while playing Magic the Gathering, Commander to be precise. Although I haven’t been actively engaged in it recently, I certainly miss playing in Dungeons & Dragons campaigns. I’m also fond of World of Warcraft and have enjoyed playing the classic versions that remind me of when I first started playing 20 years ago. I appreciate memes, Studio Ghibli, and watching Xianxia shows, a Chinese fantasy genre in which spiritual cultivation and martial arts progression enhance heroes into immortal beings.

Other hobbies involve arts, crafts, and cultural enrichment. I love excuses to wear costumes, and crafting goes hand-in-hand, most often creating costume accessories. I adore Renaissance festivals and visit the Texas Renaissance Festival regularly. I create jewelry and make art for self-expression. I love to read a range of books from high magic fantasy to non-fiction clinical topics. I attend art exhibits and cultural music and dance performances, like Kodo: Warabe, a thrilling Japanese drumming and dancing experience at Jones Hall in 2025.

I cannot write about myself without talking about my love of nature and the outdoors. When I travel, I like to visit places where I will enjoy being outside. I have traveled to many countries in Europe, the Balkans, Central America, island destinations, and some beautiful places in the states. I adore hiking in mountainous regions, like Nathan and I did on our 2026 trip to Oregon.

I have a deep connection to walking labyrinths. Walking in a meditative state and usually outdoors is a beautiful combination. Labyrinths are not mazes, but pathways that lead to a center and then are exited via the path you came from. Did you know that Houston has several public and free labyrinths? Did you know the use of labyrinths for walking and labyrinth symbols began over 3,000 years ago? (Miller, 2024) I find that walking labyrinths is fascinating, connective, grounding, and refreshing.
